Pardus maps the disks and disk partitions of the computer to unique addresses in the file system hierarchy. Partition that the system resides is addressed as “/” and others can be addressed by the user to addresses. For example, a partition full of photos can be associated with the address “/home/pardus/photos”.

This way of addressing is similar to addresses people are used to on the internet. Essential addresses are assigned at the system installation and later disk additions/removal and enabling/disabling partitions is done via Disk Manager.

Pardus products aimed at personal use come with great enhancements and usually these mean greater changes in the underlying system. In those cases, simply updating your software may not be sufficient.

For example when moving from Pardus 2009 to Pardus 2011, just updating your installed software is not sufficient. In that case, Upgrade Manager helps you for a smooth and easy transition.

Pardus runs many platform capabilities as services that run behind the scenes. This makes it possible to benefit from these capabilities both on the host computer and from the network the computer is connected to.

This architecture includes advanced sharing capabilities along with web/e-mail servers for web developers. All these services can be started, stopped or set to be run on the next start of the system with the Service Manager tool.
